Morning Wake Up Call- Brunch

Good Morning!

We have an adorable French Bakery in town and the food is delicious. This is my new favorite brunch item. It's called Cocotte Brioche. (Cocotte basically means little serving bowl) Homemade butter brioche bread filled with - my favorite choice - crab, asparagus, and swiss cheese, topped with 2 perfectly poached eggs and finished with a light mustard sauce. It is heavenly.

Notes From the Country - Snow!

We finally got snow yesterday! It's usually really dry here. We are technically in the high desert in this part of Colorado. But we get a little share of the white stuff.

It's especially nice because everything is usually brown here during the winter. Pretty bland. But when it snows....

then it looks like this. And this is much prettier. Yes, colder too. But much more inspiring.
Not everyone appreciates the snow though :)

The chicken house always looks pretty in the snow

Even sleeping Cottonwood trees look beautiful

Of course I like the view best from inside my General Store - where it's warm and cozy and smells nice from scented candles

I'm getting ready to put some new accessories in my shop

And, I'm almost finished with my Spring 2013 Runway inspired apron pattern

Here's a peak! I'll have these aprons in my shop next month in some fun Spring colors and patterns.

I've also been getting into the lovely habit of buying fresh flowers during the winter. They make me happy -Roses, Tulips, whatever  happens to be at the grocery store that strike my fancy when I'm there.

Or a little Orchid plant! My Meyer lemon tree in the background just finished blossoming and it smelled heavenly for weeks - now there are tiny lemons trying to grow.

What I was just listening to...
and because my interest in music is so is my latest "I'm in love with this band and they inspire me and I listen to them every day music"

Carry On!

Afternoon Pick Me Up

The local breweries and places around town that serve local brews are usually hopping in the afternoon. People wander in for coffee, beer, hang out on their computers, seek refuge from shopping, bike rides, or work. Fashion mags and a beer - my idea of a relaxing happy hour.

Morning Wake Up Call

Good morning!

When I'm at home I like my coffee or tea in cups with saucers. I think it makes it special. This botanical Portmeirion cup and saucer is nice because it's not too big, and as the weather has warmed up to 50 ish lately, I was feeling a little like spring. I know it's way to early, but I can dream. This cup has a Scarlet Pimpernel on it. Scarlet Pimpernels are described as a common roadside flower, and the petals close up when it's cloudy out. I love flowers that do that. Morning Glory's are similar. I think I'm a little like these flowers in that I tend to want to curl up at home when it's cloudy and cold out.

Speaking of pimpernels, I've never seen the movie The Scarlet Pimpernel. It's an adventure-romance that stars a baronet who presents himself as a "fop" (someone who is very vain and fashionable) in 18th century London society, but he's secretly a hero who saves French aristocrats from the guillotine during the French Revolution.

There is a 1934 version and a 1982 television version. Both are suppose to be good. I think I'll put it on my list for the next rainy(or snowy) day when I feel like curling up and watching a movie.

Sewing Tales - The General Store

This is my workroom. Early American/Primitive has been my style for quite a while, and I went with an old general store theme, based around my table. I bought it at a wonderful little store that used to be downtown called The Nest. I used to sell my primitive cloth dolls there, and with some of my earnings I bought their work table when they closed their shop. It's 9 feet long and over 2 1/2 feet wide and I love it.   Don't you love the General Store cat. He's my favorite thing in there, but I'm biased.

My husband built my general store shelves and I just stained them dark. The fabric is taking over though so a shelf remodel is in my near future.

Now more often than not a Vogue, W, or Bazaar magazine will be mixed in with the old ones.

The general store phone. No caller id though...
The general store clock. My husband bought it for me because, well I love cookoo clocks.
I won't go back to a regular iron for sewing now that I've found this.

One of my latest aprons I finished recently, and part of my dream board behind. :)

Lunch Break

At one of my favorite restaurants downtown, they serve a beer cheese soup made with one of our more famous local brews, Fat Tire. It's served with popcorn. Cute idea instead of crackers, no?

Morning Wake Up Call

Good Morning! A short week after for everyone here a holiday. Martin Luther King Jr Day, President Obama's second inauguration day, and we saw the movie Lincoln. Very fitting. Very moving. And as far as Oscars go, sorry Hugh but I think Daniel Day Lewis has got you beat. I felt like I was watching President Lincoln. At least that's how I imagine him to be.

Afternoon Pick Me Up

It would be dangerous for me to live in some of my favorite places full time. I'm thinking of New York (Manhattan) and London. I would be sneaking off to matinees whenever I could. One year we were in Manhattan and I saw 7 broadway shows in a week. I can't get enough of quality live theatre, musicals, or movies. As it is I think a movie in the afternoon is the perfect pick me up. I love movies of all genres - from action to thriller to drama to comedy to independent and foreign. Movies have always been a motivating factor in my life. It being Oscar season, there are a lot of great movies to choose from. Yesterday afternoon my daughter and I saw The Impossible - about the Tsunami in Asia in 2004? Difficult to watch - cried a lot. Very emotional. But a great movie. Naomi Watts is up for an Oscar - which I found just a little odd given the roll she played. I thought the teenage kid - Tom Holland was especially good. Amazing story.

Morning Wake Up Call

Good Morning! I love aprons but I'm glad I wasn't a housewife of the forties or fifties as depicted in these pictures...wait a minute. I iron and do dishes and laundry and sew and scrub sinks and floors...aaah! I just don't look this good or happy when I'm doing all that.

Animals A to Z

Shhh. Meet the light of my life. I call him Sweetness. My husband is irrationally jealous at the way I talk to him. But how could I resist? Here's the back story...

I wanted one of those adorable pure bred long hair persian cats. We were going to New York that year. I wanted to buy him there. I wanted to name him Manhattan. I went to THE pet store in Grenwich Village that was on Sex in the City...They had persian kittens! The store owner was soo attentive! They were $1800.00! My husband walked out. I reluctantly gave up the adorable ball of fur I clutched and walked out too. And pouted. Fast forward to home. My youngest daughter and I visit the local humane society. We looked at all the kittens. Yeah, cute. Black and white, black, orange. hmmm. Out at the front desk, the girl says to check out this little one. He's really lovable. We take him into a little room. We both sit cross legged on the floor. I hold him. I put him down. He immediately takes off to chase a fly. I'm in love. His name was Lenny. Noo. His name is Manhattan....ok, he's from Colorado....his name is Manny. I even bought him a black collar with diamonds. My ode to the fancy Big Apple. I find out some weeks later while watching a Martha Stewart Living Show all about cats that he's a rag doll cat. Never heard of them! So that's why when you pick him up he just goes limp in your arms..... I could go on and on. Don't worry, you'll see much more of him.
He loves being outside. Hunting, trying to make new friends, surveying the property....
When he's not out doing his thing, he loves being by me. Let me correct that. He loves being on whatever I am doing. He wants to eat my food, plop down on whatever book I'm reading...
and has a knack for getting in the way when I'm trying to be productive.   I forgive him.
He's my little lion. He's very brave. Don't let my family tell you otherwise. Other that that first nasty, bloody close call with three raccoons early on, he's learned to pretty much take care of himself. But I still wait up for him at night when he's out past curfew.

Morning Wake Up Call

Good Monday Morning. It's been snowy and very cold all weekend. I stayed warm by eating soups and drinking tea. Also went to the movies (Life of Pi and Zero Dark Thirty - both excellent), watched playoff games, boo hoo for my Broncos, yay for my Forty Niners, made eggs benedict, and watched the Golden Globes.

Today I'm sewing.

Morning Wake Up Call

Good Morning London! Another of my favorite cities. There is so much to see and experience. We walked across this bridge. It's amazing. I love how there is modern mixed with old - really old architecture and history. We stayed at the Chancery Court, a beautiful hotel, and we got use to fresh croissants and beautifully designed cappuccinos every morning at the concierge lounge. That was the life - at least for a week.

Morning Wake Up Call

Good morning! Just a friendly reminder to do regular backups on your computer. Between my sick home computer, my husbands laptop, and my ipad, I'm having trouble getting my pics on my blog. I've no doubt there's an easy way, but I guess I don't do easy.

Morning Wake Up Call

Good Morning! It's been so bitterly cold and windy the last 2 days. That's no exuse for not looking stylish while feeding the animals. ;)

Sweet Dreams

Good Night Crested Butte. I love what dusk does to the mountains. Sleep well!

Morning Wake Up Call

Good Morning! Time to get on with the New Year. Deep breaths. Meditation. Exercise. Lots of work. Lots of fun. That's what I have in store for myself this year.
